Comments:
This airsoft gas
blow-back pistol is made in Japan by Tokyo Marui (TM). The airguns in the Hi-Capa series are replicas of
various STI pistols, which are popular with IPSC competitors.
Due to its plastic slide (the frame is metal), this gun must be used with HFC134a
gas. The slide is made from very light-weight plastic and feels
pretty cheap. It is easy to see why the use of higher pressure
gases like propane will cause the slide to crack. The slide
cycles very fast, but has a definite plastic sound. Upgrading to
a metal slide is highly recommended. Removing the slide provides access to the adjustable hop up
control. This pistol is styled like the STI Legend with full blow-back
action, double-sided thumb safety and backstrap safety. The trigger is
two-stage, with the first stage being short and smooth and the
second stage having a crisp break. The TM Hi-Capa is an
excellent performer right out of the box when used with 0.25 g
Excel BBs. Due to the lightweight plastic slide and the heavy
magazine, the gun is grip heavy. This gun is a favorite of
modders due to the large number of after-market parts available
from companies like Nine Ball, Shooter's Design, and Guarder. By
replacing the plastic slide and outer barrel with metal versions
and upgrading the recoil and trigger springs, the TM Hi-Capa can
be turned into a competitive standard class race pistol for
under $250. These upgrades also allow the pistol to use propane
as the propellant. However, the TM Hi-Capa is a decent starter
pistol for practical shooting with no modifications. This particular gun was purchased from DEN TRINITY in
Hong Kong to use for parts for repairing and upgrading other TM
Hi-Capa-based race pistols.

Performance:
Measurements were made on
6/10/07 at a temperature of 81 ºF and 14' elevation. A ten shot string was fired
from a bench rest at 15' using Excel BBs (0.25 g) and HFC134a
gas.
The highest velocity measured was 227 fps and the lowest was 223 fps
(average of the 10-shot string was 224 fps). A five shot string
fired offhand using open sights, Excel BBs (.25 g), and
HFC134a gas grouped at 0.68". Click the thumbnails below to see larger images.

Left Profile 2:
The slide and outer barrel are made of light-weight plastic. The
trigger and grips are also plastic. Metal parts include the
frame, inner barrel, recoil spring guide, slide stop, thumb
safety, grip safety, mag release, and sights.

 |
Takedown: Removing the slide provides access to the adjustable
hop up control.

Turning the hop-up control
counter-clockwise increases the hop.

View of Inner and Outer Barrels: The TM brass barrel is nicely
machined and makes a good fit with the plastic outer barrel.

Unfortunately, the outer barrel
has a pronounced seam running down the middle. |
 |
Left Side Markings: The markings on
the gun are "nonsense" words that bear no relation to the
firearms on which this gun is styled. |
 |
Loading BBs: The BB
follower (spring) must be held back by your finger when loading BBs into the magazine.
The standard magazine valve works well for both HFC134a gas as
well as Green Gas or propane. However, the higher pressure gases
should be avoided unless the slide and springs have been
upgraded.
