Comments:
The Cybergun Tanfoglio Witness 1911
is made in Taiwan by KWC. Although this all metal airgun carries
the licensed trademarks for the Tanfoglio Witness, it is
actually an excellent replica of the Colt 1911A1. Since Cybergun
also has a license to use Colt trademarks, it seems strange that
this gun was not marketed under the Colt name. Interestingly,
Cybergun also markets an all plastic air pistol
by the same name that is made in Taiwan by Wingun. The fit
and finish of the Witness 1911 are superb. Despite being made
from cast metal, there are no visible seams on this gun. Among
steel BB shooting airguns, the Cybergun Witness 1911 is the most
faithful replica of a Colt 1911A1 produced to date (right down
to the lanyard loop and Parkerized-looking finish). All controls
function just as they do on the firearm and takedown is nearly
the same. The blowback action on the Witness 1911 is impressive
and the slide locks back on the last shot. The trade-off for
this blowback performance is a comparatively low muzzle
velocity. However, the Witness 1911 manages more than 60 good
shots from each CO2
cylinder. The single-action trigger on the Witness 1911 is
excellent. It has a small amount of take-up in the first stage
and a light (2.5 lb) and crisp second stage. The non-adjustable
sights produce a good sight picture but the gun shoots high (POI
about 3/4" above POA).
The Tanfoglio Witness 1911 has a
removable magazine that contains the BB magazine, the CO2
cartridge, and the gas valve. BBs are loaded through the opening
just above the tip of the spring follower when it is held all
the way down. The follower must be released after loading in
order for BBs to feed properly. The piercing screw for the CO2
cylinder requires the use of a 1/4" hex key (supplied). Although
the muzzle velocity of the Witness 1911 is only 308 fps, the
shot-to-shot variation in velocity is impressively low.
Unfortunately, this excellent consistency in muzzle velocity
does not translate to good accuracy. The accuracy of the Witness
1911 is rated as only fair, producing shot groups a little under
1" with Daisy and Crosman BBs and groups of 2" or more with RWS
and Avanti BBs.

Performance:
Measurements were made on
10/13/2011 at a temperature of 74 ºF and 5000' elevation. A ten
shot string was fired from a bench rest at 15' using Crosman
Copperhead BBs (5.1 gr).
The highest velocity measured was 310 fps, the lowest was 302 fps
(average of the 10-shot string was 308 fps, s = 3). The average
velocity was close to the advertised value of 320 fps and the
shot-to-shot consistency was excellent. A
five-shot string
fired with open sights grouped at 0.81". Click the thumbnail below to see a
larger image.

Four different brands of BBs were
tested with the Tanfoglio Witness 1911. The targets below show the results
for firing five-shot groups from 15' using a bench and open
sights with Crosman Copperhead BBs (0.81"), Daisy Avanti BBs
(2.02"), Daisy
Precision Max BBs (0.88"), and RWS Match Grade BBs (2.00").
Crosman Copperhead BBs produced the best results. All
measurements are center-to-center.
