Comments:
This air pistol was manufactured by Smith & Wesson based on designs from
a former Crosman engineer, which explains the close
resemblance of the action of the 78G and 79G to the Crosman Mark
I & II. The 78G is .22 cal and the 79 G is .177 cal. Early
models of these guns had adjustable triggers, but this specimen
is a later model with a non-adjustable trigger. From 1971 to
1973, these guns were made in Tampa, Florida. In 1973, S&W moved
production from Florida to Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1978,
production was moved back to Tampa and remained there until S&W sold their airgun
division to Daisy in 1980. Daisy manufactured versions of the
S&W guns as the Daisy 780 (22 cal), Daisy 790 (177 cal), and
Daisy 41 (177 cal).
This specimen of the S&W 79G is a very hard
hitter, averaging over 500 fps with RWS R-10 pellets. Other good
pellet choices are JSB Match Diabolo (8.0 gr, avg. vel. = 451
fps, grouping = 0.37"), H&N Finale Match Rifle (8.1 gr, avg. vel. =
465 fps, grouping = 0.51"), and H&N Finale Match Pistol
(7.3 gr).

Performance:
Measurements were made on
8/03/06 at a temperature of 84 ºF and 14' elevation. A ten shot
string was fired from a bench rest at 15' using RWS R-10 pellets
(7.0 gr).
The highest velocity measured was 516 fps, the lowest was 466 fps
(average of the 10-shot string was 506 fps). A six shot string
fired with open sights grouped at 0.51". Click the thumbnail below to see a
