Comments: The Daisy Model 5170 is made in Japan for Daisy and shares styling with the STI Tactical 5.0 firearm. The outer shell of the 5170 is made entirely of plastic. The finish of the gun is what one would expect of a sub-$40 air pistol, with clearly visible seams and a few rough edges. Working controls on the 5170 include only the safety lever and magazine release. All other controls are molded into the plastic shell. The Daisy 5170 comes with four accessory rails (left, right, top, and bottom) for mounting items such as tactical lights, lasers, and optical sights. These rails look like Picatinny rails, but the slot widths are narrower than those specified for Picatinny or Weaver rails. This could make mounting accessories from manufacturers other than Daisy problematic. There is a 3/8" dovetail mount located on the top of the gun, but the other accessory rails must be removed to access it.

The 5170 is a moving barrel design where the trigger pushes the barrel forward against a spring. When the barrel is released, it slams back against the valve to release CO2. The CO2 piercing assembly does not accept Crosman-style cylinders (those with a seam around the neck) very well, so Daisy or Gamo cylinders should be used. The trigger operates in double-action mode only and is pretty light (4.74 lbs) and crisp for this type of action. The gun gets at least 75 good shots from a CO2 cylinder. The Daisy 5170 has remarkable accuracy (0.34") and muzzle velocity (493 fps) for an inexpensive BB gun and would make an excellent plinker, especially with a red-dot sight, for those looking to rip up some soda cans without ripping up there bank account.

Performance: Measurements were made on 12/20/2010 at a temperature of 70 ºF and 5000' elevation. A ten shot string was fired from a bench rest at 15' using Crosman Copperhead BBs (5.1 gr). The highest velocity measured was 516 fps, the lowest was 473 fps (average of the 10-shot string was 493 fps, s = 13). The highest velocity was very close to the maximum advertised value of 520 fps. A five-shot string fired with a red-dot sight grouped at 0.34". Click the thumbnail below to see a larger image of the test target and the 5170 mounted with a Daisy #7809 red-dot sight. Click here for a description of the measurement methods.

Four different brands of BBs were tested with the Daisy 5170. The targets below show the results for firing five-shot groups from 15' using a bench and red-dot sight with Crosman Copperhead BBs (0.34"), Daisy Avanti BBs (0.57"), Daisy Precision Max BBs (0.54"), and RWS Match Grade BBs (0.67"). Crosman Copperhead BBs produced the best results. All measurements are center-to-center.

Right Profile: The magazine base covers the piercing screw giving the 5170 a clean profile and more realistic appearance. This is a big improvement over all previous Daisy models except the 008 and 5501. The accessory rail looks like a standard Picatinny rail, but the slot width (0.160") is smaller than both the Picatinny (0.206") and Weaver (0.180") specifications. If you plan to install accessories from manufacturers other than Daisy, be sure to check the fit before purchasing.

Front View: The accessory rail can be removed by taking out the three screws marked in the picture at the left. The only working controls on the 5170 are the safety lever and the magazine release. All other controls are molded into the plastic shell.

Left Profile 2: Both the front and rear sights on the 5170 are fixed. The sights are visible even when the accessory rail is installed (although using them this way is not very practical).

Removing the accessory rail reveals a 3/8" dovetail mount molded into the top of the gun. This gives the user a lot of options for mounting accessories on the 5170.

Loading BBs: The Daisy uses a removable 21-shot magazine. The owner's manual states the capacity as 15, but the actual capacity is 21. The spring-loaded follower in the magazine has a locking position, which makes the magazine easier to load.

Loading CO2: Pry off the left grip panel to gain access to the CO2 compartment. The magazine must be removed to gain access to the piercing screw. Crosman CO2 cylinders do NOT fit the piercing assembly of the 5170 very well, which results in incomplete puncturing of the cylinder. Gamo, Umarex, and Daisy cylinders work much better.
